Description Concering Books Myth-ing Persons (Myth Adventures #5)
After the events of the last book Skeeve and Aazh as partners got themselves a very nice base of operations with just one tiny little problem: one of the doors in their dwelling (the kind they use in banks for safe vaults) led into an unknown and potentially deadly dimension. Circumstances forced Aazh to go in to investigate while Skeeve was tricked to be left behind. When Skeeve learned Aazh had stuck in a jail with a murder charge he rushed after his partner almost blindly accompanied by his goon/bodyguard (on a load from the Mob) and Massha. For those unfamiliar with the series, the second companion is a very colorful character who uses her countless jewelry items she wears to perform magic. The said items tend to malfunction often and in the most inappropriate moments. Hilarity ensures.
Now that I reread the book I realized it contains some very subtle signs of the series decline down the road. None of the new characters, including the ones who will reappear later are not as good as already established ones with only possible exception of a werewolf who did not get enough screen time; he reminds me of this guy:
Skeeve's love interest came out completely unbelievable and weak. Who needs a love interest when Tanda is always close by, anyway???
However the escape scene has got to be one of the best in the series if not THE best. It really saves the book and earns it an extra star. I challenge anybody to read it, picture it in your head and try not to smile at least at the absurdity and hilarity of the situation.
I would like to use the opportunity to rant a little. I keep saying that the word "racist" is really overused these days to the point where sometimes it loses its original meaning and just becomes "a person who does not agree with me". I was looking at the reviews for this book and stumbled upon a real gem and a proof of what I just sad. Both author and Skeeve were accused (I am taking seriously here) of being racist towards vampires and werewolves. Now I have seen everything; I will just shut up.

Skeeve and Aahz make a surprising pair and the whole group is even better!I found more feelings and emotions in this story. I loved to see more emotional Skeeve and how it worked during interaction with others. Other characters had their emotional side exposed too. A big circle of friends is enlarged once more with a friendly nervous neighborhood cherub vampire and a melodramatic werewolf talking English with a French accentWelcome to a crazy vampire limbo party! And to do this Skeeve and hisRobert Asprin is always good to relax with for some down time. I needed a little fun and some humor and got it. Some folks running a con in the Bazaar at Deva use Skeeve's tent to escape from the authorities who tell he and Aahz that they are responsible for the money owed by the con artists (not very good ones since they got caught). Aahz is not one to let go of money, so he goes after them to bring them back after knocking Skeeve out. Then Skeeve learns he needs to go to the rescue. And the
Awesome!
entertaining but got realllllly sick of the paper thin female characters and constant body shaming jokes,
Sadly the fifth entry in the MYTH Adventures series felt a little flat for me. For starters I really did not like Luanna and Skeeve's little crush on her annoyed me. I mean he has the amazing Tanda if he wants to develop a crush, so why is he falling for a small-time swindler who is using him? When you add in the racism (in terms of werewolve and vampire-phobia) and basically Skeeve being the only hero I just lost my interest. Luckily I know that there are better books after this, but still its
Your back door leads into a world of vampires. What could be better? (Probably anything.)
I have always enjoyed fantasy novels and I have a fond place in my heart for campy pun filled fantasy and Robert Asprin definitely writes books that fit the bill. His books remain good although they do not quite stand up to the test of time.
