I was needing a book that make me feel closer to my mom in Heaven, and I found this book. My mother always said I should read this book, she said it was wonderful. A recomendation from her is something you better not miss.A long letter from a grandmother to her grandaughter. If you wish a long confession of how she feels in the nightfall of her life. Intimate, profound, with the feeling on the skin, anyone can feel related to it. I really like it. Of course, it made me cry in many parts,

This is the brutally honest letter a grandmother who is nearing death writes to the granddaughter she raised alone. Her granddaughter is obviously a headstrong young woman who has moved to America leaving her grandmother in Italy heartbroken and alone. The grandmother can feel death coming and wants to leave her granddaughter a letter of history and hope for the future. She pulls no punches. She is not afraid to illuminate her own shortcomings as well as those around her, granddaughter included.

I borrowed this book from a friend and refused to give it back. I reluctantly returned it only for my friend to give it to me as a present shortly afterwards as I could not find it in print. A grandmother, feeling that her last days are quickly approaching, starts writing a long letter to her granddaughter in the form of a diary. what starts as a review of the events of the day and her relationship with the granddaughter which at the time of the girls departure (to America, to study) seems to
-Every now and then we saw one (firework) that exploded before it got very high. Well, whenever I think about my mother's life, or my grandmother's, or the lives of so many people I know, that's the image that comes to mind~fireworks that fizzled down in the lower altitudes instead of climbing up to the sky.-Though you may not know it, your whole life and the lives of those close to you are at stake when you choose whether to go straight or turn aside.-This (religion) is one of those areas whereIt sounded so appealing and started off promising enough, but there was an inconsistency somewhere. What should have been a poignant memoir left me feeling sad for the characters as individuals and yet not moved by the story as a whole. Tamaro is not the best writer, she needs a better editor or I have just been spoiled by some fine writing recently. An easy quick read, but still not worth recommending. Disappointing.
