Description To Books Imperial Woman
Imperial Woman is the fictionalized biography of the last Empress in China, Ci-xi, who began as a concubine of the Xianfeng Emperor and on his death became the de facto head of the Qing Dynasty until her death in 1908.Buck recreates the life of one of the most intriguing rulers during a time of intense turbulence.Tzu Hsi was born into one of the lowly ranks of the Imperial dynasty. According to custom, she moved to the Forbidden City at the age of seventeen to become one of hundreds of concubines. But her singular beauty and powers of manipulation quickly moved her into the position of Second Consort.Tzu Hsi was feared and hated by many in the court, but adored by the people. The Empress's rise to power (even during her husband's life) parallels the story of China's transition from the ancient to the modern way.

Pearl Buck's novel of the life of the Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908) is over long and written in over wrought prose. making the omnipresent narrator appear to be writing in some kind of strangled English for Chinese speakers. This made the book extremely difficult for me to read an it took me forever to make it through its almost 400 pages.I know enough about Chinese history to know that Dowager Empress Cixi was an intelligent and ruthless palace schemer who, but the luck of having given birthIn this book we follow the life and political growth of the last Empress of China, Tzu Hsi. At times I was totally immersed in this story which is rich with the traditions, beauty and splendour of life at the court of Imperial China. The many palaces throughout the land and palaces within palaces, gorgeous, expensive robes of state, and functions of eunuchs, concubines and servants, were detailed throughout. At other times I was repelled by some of the orders Empress Tzu Hsi gave to remove those
Who wrote about Chinese history and the empresses before Anchee Min? Where did she get her inspiration from? Well before Anchee Min there was Pearl Buck. Now, now simmer down. There is nothing wrong with Anchee Min I have read her books and love them too. She has a new book just released on 5-07-2013, The Crooked Seed. Cant wait to grab a copy of this one! Oh boy the to read list goes on and on! So on to the review. This book was originally released in 1956. It has been re-released 5-21-2013 as

My friend sent me this book without warning. She thought I might like it, and she was right. Imperial Woman was a fascinating story of the Chinese Dowager Empress Cixi, or Tsu-Hsi as she's called in the book. Cixi joins the court of the Emperor as a concubine and manages to become the main influence over the Emperor, and eventually Empress - by means that are sometimes ruthless, sometimes kind, but always with the goal in sight of extrapolating herself from a position of servitude. Buck's
I love PSB and this book does not disappoint! Cixi is brought to life in this compelling narrative which is rich with description but not so much as to render the style meandering. It does not sensationalize the early days of cixi's life like Empress Orchid by Anchee Min does. It skims over her youth a lot and focuses on the battles she has the wage, personally and nationally. But that's OK because I feel PSB did not take too many liberties to create or fabricate details. I feel PSB stayed as
Great book! I read this book 30 years ago, and it was interesting to come back to it now. In the intervening years, I've read many excellent historical fiction novels by talented writers, such as Philippa Gregory, Margaret George, and Conn Iggulden. As a result, I enjoyed "Imperial Woman" this time around a little less than 30 years ago. Pearl Buck's style was slightly more plodding than that of the other authors whom I like better. The details she brought to the story were not quite as
I thoroughly enjoyed learning about this era and this court culture, neither of which I knew anything about. The book is not always the easiest to read but what I took away from it far outweighs the sometimes slow reading and awkward sentences.
