Interpretation Concering Books The Long Valley

This classic collection of short stories serves as the ideal introduction to Steinbeck's work. Set in the idyllic Salinas Valley in California, where simple people farm the land and struggle to find a place for themeselves in the world, these stories reflect many of the concerns key to Steinbeck as a writer; the tensions between town and city, labourers and owners, past and present. Included here are the celebrated tales, THE MURDERER and THE CHRYSANTHEMUMS.

Criticize Regarding Books The Long Valley

Short stories that give you a vignette glimpse into life in the West and always leave you wanting more. They fade out just as you want to see what happens next. Steinbeck was an incredibly gifted writer who knew how to craft a character and a scene. Lovely!

4★Im going to be lazy and quote Wikipedia. The short stories were written over several years and are set in Steinbecks birthplace, the Salinas Valley in California [all but one]. They include the prize-winning tale The Murder [yikes!], The Chrysanthemums, the representation of lynch mob violence in The Vigilante [double yikes!!] and the classic Red Pony tales" [which was later published on its own]. I would also hi-light here the devious passive-agressive husband-gets-back-at-his-wife account in

3.9 starsI feel bad for books that I read during my slump because for a book with only 122 pages, it took me almost a whole month to finish it. I break the rating for the short stories as follows:1. The Raid: 2 stars. I dont know exactly what I was reading2. Breakfast: 5 stars. This is just short & pure delight3. The Murder: 4 stars. Gruesome in a way4. Flight: 4 stars. Love the details and the fear of lonesomeness it evoke5. The Leader of the People: 5 stars. This is closes to real life as

I was really looking forward to this book. Back in the 90's, when I was living in Santa Cruz, I took my mother to the National Steinbeck Center, as she was a Steinbeck fan as well. I clearly remember displays about The Chrysanthemum's, The Snake, and of course, Steinbeck's bright red truck / camper he lived in while experiencing crossing America for his book Travel's with Charley (my first Steinbeck experience). So listening to The Long Valley had me waxing nostalgically the entire time.Sadly,

The Long Valley was published in 1938. The majority of its stories had previously appeared in various American magazines. The stories themselves, Saint Katy the Virgin being the exception - a strangely whimsical tale set in mediaeval France - are set in Steinbecks birthplace, the background for so much of his writing, the Salinas Valley in California. Apparently, Steinbeck demanded that Saint Katy the Virgin be included in the collection, and although I enjoyed it, I have to admit that it does

I came to John Steinbeck's The Long Valley in the heels of his excellent novella, The Moon is Down. Not having read any of Steinbeck's writing for years, there was just something soothing about his prose that made me reach for another work of his. I must say that I was not disappointed. The Long Valley is a collection of ten short stories, published in 1938. The stories are: The ChrysanthemumsThe White QuailFlightThe SnakeBreakfastThe RaidThe HarnessThe VigilanteJohnny BearThe MurderAt 186
